In a recent white paper, “Disability and the Disabled Mindset: The human costs and the opportunity,” Aetna raised the provocative question of whether the terms “disability” and “disabled” do more harm than good—particularly in light of evidence that the “disabled” label strips individuals of the purpose provided by intentional work. The document included some suggestions for supporting individuals who are inclined to rejoin their colleagues in the working world. This paper discusses some of the steps necessary to assist a return to normal, beginning with a focus on ability rather than disability, and on the uniqueness of each individual. Other recommendations include a more collaborative relationship with health care providers, an early focus on return to work, and involvement by the employer.
